The Berlin Wall Game

Agent Perkins learns that Yvon has helped a young woman, Olga, who works for Colonel Schickelgruber, to escape from the Stasi Headquarters. The magic phoenix bookmark enables Colin to track down Yvon in the city. The latter wishes to spirit Olga and her brother across the Berlin Wall and into West Berlin from where they hope to travel to New York to meet up with their aunt. During a dense snowstorm Colin leads an attack on one of the watchtowers on the wall and M disables its searchlight. Colin, Frank and co. smuggle the two fugitives into the American controlled zone of the city. Many years later (or only a few days after Colin’s return home) Olivia purchases some tickets for a concert by Olga’s brother on his latest tour of the U.K.

“Yvon has done what?” gasped Frank. “Oh, not again! This is getting to be beyond a joke!”

I’m afraid so,” admitted Agent Perkins. “What can you expect? The man’s a loose cannon.”

“But posing as a Stasi officer and arresting someone! Who was it, by the way?”

Agent Braine’s deep voice joined in the conversation. “That young woman at the Stasi Headquarters. She’s Schickelgruber’s personal assistant. I think her real name is Olga Donnitz or something like that. She uses a false name at work.”

“Oh, typical of Yvon! He’s got a weakness for women called Olga,” groaned Frank. “That was his first wife’s name.”

Perkins turned to Colin. “Have you heard anything, Agent Pond?”

“Not at all,” murmured Colin, “but he’s usually got a good reason for disappearing off the face of the earth. He seems to have got what some people call ‘a knight in shining armour syndrome’. I mean a sort of urge to rescue ladies in distress. I’ve got a friend at home, who’s a bit like that, so I’ve seen it before.”

He was of course thinking of his great friend Jez Jellysox, but he didn’t mention him by name.

Frank was frowning behind his dark glasses. He muttered to himself, “Donnitz, Donnitz... Why does that name ring a bell? Ah, yes, Doenitz. Admiral Doenitz (He pronounced it as ‘Dernits’) was an important figure at the end of World War Two. When Hitler died he left Doenitz in command of everything, including the armed forces. This Olga woman is perhaps related to the admiral.”

Only Colin had seen M’s face light up. The emu had been stalking around the dark lower floor of the old abandoned factory, occasionally standing behind the other men and swinging his long neck around them to gaze up into a face. The bookmark pulsed and confirmed what Colin already knew. M had been alerted by what he thought was the mention of doughnuts. He was going to be disappointed. There did not seem to be many luxuries like that here in East Germany in the 1980s.

“The problem,” said Frank, “is how are we going to find Yvon this time? We are in hostile territory, behind enemy lines so to speak.”

“Well.” Colin drew the word out.
